More useful information on lymphoses: The major function of the lymphatic vascular system is the evacuation of protein particles lingering between the cells of the human tissue. Several times a day the whole tissue liquid is transported through the lymphatic vascular system, filtered in the lymph nodes and controlled by immunological defence system.
The lack of a lymphatic vessel (primary lymphedema) as well as an interruption of lymphatic vessels (secondary lymphedema) due to an injury or an operation are the most frequent causes of disorders of the lymphatic flux, which in turn provoke a congestion of the fluid rich in proteins in the tissue. Secondary lymphedema are considerably more frequent than primary lymphedema. On our region they occur essentially after operations or radiation therapies treating cancers (for example secondary lymphedema in the arm). The lymphedema is a particular chronic disease pattern of the skin, of the subcutaneous tissue and sometimes of the internal organs. If a lymphedema is not treated the tissue alterations progress threatening to eventually cause invalidity. All parts of the body can be affected; however, the limbs are most frequently concerned.
The protein abundance in the retained tissue fluid leads in the long term to the characteristic tissue alterations, which are unique compared to other edema. First it is a soft swelling leaving hollows, which gives way to an increasing tissue hardening. In the third stage complications occur, such as highly feverish skin infections, which in turn cause an aggravation of the lymphedema.
